Doobie Brothers
Greatest Hits
"jgs" jgs@ipa.net Well, well, well, how forgetful we've become in our old age, if you've truly partied in the mobile dimension during the 70's, then surely you have grooved to The Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits, (just try and find it on ebay, I dare ya!).
Elvis Presley
What Now My Love
CPZemba@aol.com According to an Elvis encyclopedia called 'Elvis: From A to Z', RCA or Pickwick released an album called "What Now My Love." circa 1973. This 8 track sold over 1 million copies and Elvis became the first recipient of the Golden Cartridge Award!
Touch "Vincent P. Guytan" vpg1@airmail.net "a quad tape...very advanced synthesized sound effects for the early
70's...very hard to find and a classic."
Elvis Presley
Recorded Live at Madison Square Garden
l.falk@frw.uva.nl "Elvis was at his best in the seventies and live. I likethe screaming audience. And his easy listening songs fit perfectly with 8-tracks."
Elvis Presley

  • Cart Graphics. Check out the Satellite graphic beaming a picture of Elvis, in all his jumpsuited glory, over the entire earth, as seen from space. This is a wonderful example of the excitement people felt towards the space program in the early years, and that what is now commonplace was once new and amazing.
  • Lyrics. Elvis wows us with his irresistable charms. "My brain is flamin', and I don't know which way to go," "I'm a Napalm Bomb, and I mean to blow your mind." There's no denying it. Elvis rocks.
  • Pivotal point in the career of an American Legend. This was a big comeback tour for Elvis, beginning in 1973. This tour is where Elvis perfected his "Vegas" style. A benchmark of lounge-rock development.
  • And, remember, I wasn't an Elvis fan before I got the cart. Now I see what all those midwestern housewives are screaming about. Elvis is the King.
Eagles
Hotel California
Optimus Prime autobotprime@yahoo.com I think my personal copy of "Eagles: Hotel California" should be in your Hall of Fame not just because it is a great album, but it has broken, by far, more than any other of my 8-tracks. I have popped the case open atleast 20 times to fix it...it still works fine in my car, on my Craig underdash player.
THE MAGIC GARDEN
THE 5th DIMENSION
RCHRSTIE@aol.com The sound quality of that cartridge is far more superior than any CD I've EVER heard. The tape was released on Liberty Records (1968) with a   feature called SONIC SPECTRUM + (exclusivly on Liberty) This is explained by saying the tape was recorded with "expanded frequency response (efr) and that lower distortion was made possible by major advancements in duplication techniques and a superior new tape." Well I guess all of that jargon worked because the songs come out with crisp and clear stereo separation, the best sound I have ever heard. and thats pretty amazing considering i am  20 years old and grew up in the era of the cassette and compact disc.
Starcastle
Fountains of Light
TODDY3@prodigy.net " In 1977 when this was released everyone I knew couldn't stand the blatant YES-ripoff qualities of this highly under-rated Prog Rock band. I didn't take the tape out of my player for what seemed like about two years. The synthesizer work still sends shivers down my spine and the horrible editing of the title track remains etched in my mind. "
Genesis
Nursery Cryme
Victor Snow
midiwiz@swbell.net
"True masterpiece of early Genesis prog-rock, before they became the striped-down pop outfit. The 8-track version actually brings out the raw power and genius of the group better than the over processed CD version now available. This is also the first Genesis recording with Phil Collins, primarily on drums. He also sings lead on one track, "For Absent Friends". Nursery Cryme is the one that brought me into early Genesis, and is a must for all early '70s Prog-Rock fans. Its nearly impossible to find on 8-track anymore.
Buckingham Nicks Ned Harkey ned213@ccs.logicsouth.com The best 8-Track I ever owned. I can't believe that Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Polydor Records have not released this album on CD.
Van Halen
Van Halen 1
dshockley@webtv.net The sheer power of the music and dynamic range make this a prime choice. This 8-track helped end the era of disco, need I say more?
Pussy Galore Volume 3
"For adults Only"
"TERRY \"TOURIST\" BEBERNICK" TERRY.BEBERNICK@gte.net

This pornographic 8-Track tape rules! I don't have volume 1 or 2, and who knows how many were in the set? I imagine someone probably sent away for the set from an early 70's skin mag! The front is very plain with Pussy Galore written in 70's shagadelic lettering. The real gem is the recording itself!! Very verbal,no holds barred! lots of good sound effects too! Squeaking bed frames, etc. Not the kind of 8-Track you put on when the relatives are around!
Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack 1. Jason Speer
hoss@eagle.cc.ukans.edu

2. StuGale@aol.com

1. How can anyone possibly deny the place that this 8-track holds in history? It captures the "spirit" of the entire 8-track moment. Disco of the day lives forever on this fine specimen.

2. 8 tracks - 1970s - disco - polyester - this soundtrack is an easy choice for the Hall of Fame, I especially love playing it at the 70s parties on my Weltron 2001 player

Malcolm X
Malcolm X Speaks To The People Of Harlem

Chris Collins eight-tracks@rocketmail.com

Unfortunately, there is no track listing on the tape, it just appears to be exerpts of a speech or speeches spliced together onto the tape. It's quite fascinating to listen to this activist speak, because it is truly history in the making.

Journey To the Moon
Buddah Records (catalog# 1-5045) Narration by Victor Jay, music by Sound of Genesis

Alan Smithee
alnsmthe@concentric.net

Recorded live on Earth, in space, on the Moon. This tape is an absolute trip, literally! A narrator describes the first moon trip mixed withl NASA (including the famous "One small step for man") mixed into this instrumental music that defines cheesy; its quality is that of "production library" music and is just plain groovy. It's extremely upbeat as the recording of the rocket launch plays, then as they get deeper into space it tries to sound, well, spacier ! Sound quality on my tape is very good The tape is complete with the black cardboard Buddah sleeve, with a note "You will enjoy countless hours of musical pleasure with this high quality cartridge." A list of "Other Great Buddah Artists" is printed on the left and right spines of the "sleeve.
The Best Of Tommy James And The Shondells

(Quadraphonic)

Bruce D. Arnold
barnold@i-cafe.net
Although "I Think We're Alone Now" (which, in the CD era, DID appear in true stereo) and "Hanky Panky" seem to be "rechanneled-quad" (!), the other eight selections are splendid in remixed 4-channel, particularly "Crimson And Clover," "Crystal Blue Persuasion" and "Mony Mony." Plus, for Q8-format purposes, the contents are arranged differently from the LP/CD versions - no cutting into the middle of songs here! Even if you dislike James' "bubblegum" music approach, this is an awesome quad tape - considering the music predates the 1970s' quad era!!

Rush
2112

Gino Russano
Gino.Russano@MotivationMedia.com

My first car was an early '70's Oldsmobile with an in-dash player, and the all time favorite while cruising with my pals was Rush "2112". I used to have to wedge a matchbook against the tape to keep it from squeeling, it had bleed-through from the other tracks, we just played it to death!

Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here (Quad Cart)

David Ray
davidray@oio.net

One of their finest works that was ever made, and the only one of their
albums I am aware of that was released on a Quad Cart. [No, several others included Dark Side of the Moon were available in Quad - Malcolm]. . This is one of those Late-Night, Low-Light, Reflection, albums that is best consumed alone without any mind-altering substances.

MICHAEL NESMITH Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma (1979)

Raffa
lraffa1@maine.rr.com

Besides being a fine late solo album (it includes the proto-rap "Cruisin'), in a bizarre mix of old and new technology it includes a UPC barcode on its spine!

James Brown
Soundtrack to Black Caesar

Jeff Muhs
jmuhs@idt.net

The tape was given to me by a friend, who got it from his uncle, who had a pig that Andy Warhol would visit when he was feeling sad. Obscure music on 8 track from one of the most influential musicians of our time, plus the Andy Warhol/pig connection?... Hall of fame!

Emerson Lake and Palmer
Tarkus
Chris Collins eight-tracks@rocketmail.com

This cart is my most favorite, most listened to of all the 300 or so
that I have. It's one of the first 8-tracks ever purchased for me. My
dad picked this one up at a Goodwill and said, "Here you go, here's something you might like." This cart made me hungry for more of the group's erratic work, and to this day, the band is one of my favorite. By the way, do see them in concert if you can. They still have as much energy as they did when they recorded this album.

Aerosmith
Rocks

A. A. Ciuffetelli
ciuffeaa@esvax.es.dupont.com

Tyler and Co. had already earned a name for themselves by the time this album was released, but the classic debut, "Get Your Wings", was mine on vinyl only. "Rocks" was my first Aerosmith 8-track, and I wore it out as a college undergrad in my 1970 VW Beetle.

The Beatles
Live at the Hollywood Bowl

(promo tape)

Gary Broyhill
broyhill@lrc.edu

In 1977, Capitol issued this promotional 8-track for the Beatles Hollywood Bowl album. The tape featured five songs from the album, and is the only promotional 8-track ever released of Beatles material. No promo LPs or cassettes were ever released of the album.
Pufnstuf
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Alan Smithee
alnsmthe@concentric.net
"This was a feature film released in 1970 after they had started the Sid & Marty Krofft TV show...there are a couple instrumenal score excerpts which are simply incredible. The movie was released with a mono soundtrack but everything here's in true stereo, with all the elements of a great musical album like singers singing their parts of a song from one channel, then the next from the other... it's one of the few from Capitol Records which has a label on the back side of the tape; this has the movie credit info like that found on movie posters. This album and the movie itself are difficult to find.
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin

Jeff Dunn
jdunn@flinet.com

This was one of my first 8 tracks and guess what! Nearly every night on my favorite rock stations I'm guranteed to here a cut from it. What does that tell you? Besides my age?
Paul McCartney

David A. Pearlman
dap@vpharm.com
To my knowledge, the ONLY quad version of this ever released anywhere in the world is the quad 8-track on United Artists (US). And, like most quad United Artists titles, it's VERY hard to find...It's much rarer than any of the Capitol/Apple Beatles quads .
George Harrison electronic music

Rob G.
rwguerns@iupui.edu

if i was ever going to spend a lost weekend with my Borg/Warner portable and some sort of, umm, chemical to help pass the time, this is the tape i'd take. George proves he can get as avant as Yoko Ono with an early Moog. Does life get any better???
Pink Floyd
ummagumma
Dearhigh@aol.com This was the first release without Syd Barrett, and the reason i think should be on the list is on track 2, right after several species of small fury animals gather together in a cave and grovin with a pict at that point the tape sounds like it getting eaten by the player so you rush over and pull it out only to find out its part of the song. even after all these years I still find myself pulling the tape out at that point .
The Who
Live at Leeds
Larry C. Penoza larry.c.penoza@boeing.com Reason: The tape rocks from beginning to end to beginning to....you know. It has to be one of the Who's best live performances ever. The frequency range of the recording is perfect for an 8-track. I can leave this in my deck for days.
The Grateful Dead
Workingman's Dead

Larry C. Penoza larry.c.penoza@boeing.com

If you like the Dead, no explanation is necessary. If you don't like the Dead, you might after listening to this. This was their 1970 fusion of Country with San Francisco Rock. The songs are mostly short and well written, and many are classics.
The Edgar Winter Group
They Only Come Out at Night
Mike Byrne
porohnavi@webtv.net
"Truly a discrete quad, this was the first quad album to go gold. Why? "Frankenstein," of course! This track should go down as the ultimate in four channel technological reproduction. first, there is the true discretion of the instruments, second, the drum war between front and rear speakers. third, the synth panning effect at the height of the song. fourth, if you are not amazed after hearing this, probably no quad recordings will ever interest you. long live the multi-channel format for music reproduction!"
Ramones Leave Home Griffin Allen
MCGRIFF1@aol.com
"The format of all early Ramones are made for 8-track. No songs are cut in the middle for program changes, and since they're so short in the first place, you can listen to the whole thing in a spare 31:05. Also available on this 8-track is "Carbonna Not Glue", which was taken off the LP early on in the run due to its 'controversial' drug message. It is a great song.

Some would argue that 'Rocket to Russia' or the 'Ramones' is better. No question all three would belong in the 8-track hall of fame. The Ramones sound great on even the cheapest portable 8-track player and the carts even now are not the hardest to find of 8-tracks, thanks to Sire Records' (GRT Tapes) distribution. "

The Doors Absolutely Live Eric Carpenter
London, Ontario, Canada
theeric69@hotmail.com
"1) First of all, this is just a wonderful listen. And I mean just that...you really have to listen to this tape. This cart happens to be a very crisp and clear tape, so I listen to it frequently.
2) The album "Absolutely Live" was deleted shortly after release, and most of the selections on the album resurfaced around 1990 on a compilation called "In Concert" released on CD and cassette, probably to satisfy the Doors demand after the release of the Oliver Stone movie. This version of the album is a true tribute to the original analog release."
The Brothers Johnson: Look Out for Number One Duncan Evans (Also known as "Dunk, I want that P Funk all Funked up, Evans")

jtevans@inet-1.com
"This features great songs like "Free and Single"and "Get da Funk Outa ma Face" This is a classic tape from the Funk-a-dellic P Funk era. This deserves an induction just because of the looks I get when I blast "Get da Funk Outa ma Face" out of my Pioneer player in my 71 blazer. I recived an award for "The King of the 8 Track collection and proud of it" from my graduating class at my high school so I know what's up."
Iron Butterfly: Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida Paul Johnson, Wilmington, NC
carlton@wilmington.net
"Yeah, I know, I was sick of it then, and don't really want to hear it now, but there is an undeniable cultural significance to this particular cart. I didn't know anyone with a player that did not own at least one copy of this one. In fact you'da thought the damn players came loaded with them already inserted (kinda like windows 95!).
The other reason is that because most people only listened to the title track; after the tape got old it would become worn on one edge, lending it's own murky, muddley warping effect to the music. This happened to most copies of this title that lasted long enough, and I swear the record just doesn't sound right after your brain starts to register the old tape as "The original" (speak to me not of the CD)"
The Bubble Puppy:
A Gathering of Promises
1. Bruce Peckham smas@holly.ColoState.EDU

2. David Ray, Atoka, OK davidray@oio.net

3. Daniel Day
DDay@bco.thegoodguys.com

1. "...psychedelic band from Houston, Texas..the cart---a sought after collector's item--was released in the Spring of 1969...on the Intenational Artists label...included the group's only hit single, Hot Smoke & Sasafrass...this band had more than ample technical chops and the creativity to excel on a broad commercial level, but success just wasn't in the cards for them."

2. "I must agree with Bruce Peckham on the viability of this group. "Hot Smoke and Sasafrass" for my money should be the cornerstone song from which all other acid rock is measured. The diversity found on this tape has not been seen since. This is a must-have for any serious rock collector, regardless of the the format you discover it on. "

3. Wow! I thought I was maybe the only person on the planet who would even bother to save a Bubble Puppy 8-track. I played it just the other day and I still think it's a great album.
