8-Tracks To Hell (continued)

I read that story in 8 Track Mind Magazine in the first issue I ever saw (Summer '94). That was issue #81! Where have we been? I'm not alone, I'm not nuts, or worse an idiot. There's others like me who could easily debate the romance with these clunky chunks of music. You find copies of records you might not wanna drop bucks on but for 25 cents why not take a chance. And what weird packaging; my copy of the Beatles White Album is black. Black fake leatherette box, black tapes.

I even found a copy of the Kinks' Great Lost Kinks Album that is kinda rare. Comes with a custom cover. Those custom covers are highly sought after in 8 track world. Also found a pack of aluminized sensing tape, the kind that hold the whole loop of tape together. It's always the first thing to go in the life of an 8 track and is necessary because it makes the player change tracks. Early in the repair efforts you find using regular scotch tape means you gotta change tracks manually. Absolute worst part of repair is the buggers weren't made to be opened, it's like pulling open an oyster.

F.R. Forster the publisher of 8 Track Mind has made a film about the hobby that is 90 min. long. It'll be playing here in Vancouver at the Edison Gallery of Moving Images in September. You can get a copy of this fun 'zine by writing to them at P.O. Box 90, East Detroit, MI, 48021-0090. Thought you should know: Bill Lear of Learjet airplane fame invented the 8 track. See ya.
