Silver Apples was the eponymously titled debut by one of the earliest and weirdest American electronic-rock hybrids. The band consisted of two techno-hippies from NYC, Simeon and Dan Taylor. "Simeon" was also the name of their primary musical instrument, a wall of audio oscillators and signal generators with hand, foot, elbow, and knee pedals to actuate them. The Simeon generated melodies, chords and thick, swirling, proto-industrial textures on top of Dan's proto-tribal drumming style that would later be redefined by the likes of Can and Neu in the Krautrock movement of the early 70's. They recorded a second album, Contact, that is equally excellent. That these albums were ever available on 8-track is all the more amazing! Far-out even by 60's standards, and a big influence on scores of other American and European bands that followed. Silver Apples' entry in Lilian Roxon's seminal 1969 Rock Encyclopedia asked, "Is this the music of the future?" Judge for yourself. Silver Apples recently reformed and is making the circuit as part of the current space-rock revival. See their web site at http://www.silverapples.com/
