Notes and 8-track by Steve Ciaffa

This 8-track was originally part of an in-store display at my friends Hoyt's record store in Santa Rosa California, The Last Record Store. When we first met in 1990 he was astounded that I had a garage full of 8-tracks (Hoyt: "why would you want to collect 8-tracks, they're crap!!?"), but he gradually came to appreciate their charms. In 1992 Hoyt asked me to do a display for him of his favorite ten albums of the year as 8-track tapes. I was honored by the invitation. I had been taping my favorite bands onto 8-tracks for a long time, but I had never gone to the extent of making them look like REAL 8-tracks. This Sonic Youth cart is my favorite of the bunch, it gets played a lot (yes, the music is on it, I listen to it more than the CD I taped it from). Other carts were of Yo La Tengo, Sugar, Beastie Boys, R.E.M., & Tom Waits, to name a few. Since then I've made many more; The Breeders, Sebadoh, the Feelies, Beck, Guided by Voices, etc. I do the titles and track info on a cheesy graphics program that came with my computer called Sierra Print Artist. The covers are Canon laser prints of the CD booklets I had made at my local copy shop. Rarely do I make more than one of each title. I really see them as kind of a tribute to the Warholian spirit of product as Art and vice versa. Kinda like my version of Brillo boxes.....
