A frequently asked question is "when did they stop making 8-tracks?" The answer is -- they didn't! OK, the major labels did finally quit producing 8-track tapes about 1988. But a number of entrepreneurial souls have kept the 8-track tradition alive in the form of small production runs of independently released carts. This is a new section here on 8-Track Heaven that will provide a listing for these tapes, including (if available), ordering information. If you have a recently released 8-track ("recently" meaning the last 9-10 years!) that you'd like to have added to the page, contact us for details on what you need to do. It doesn't matter if the tape is still available -- this page is meant to be more of an archive than a product listing.

Sister Someone - s/tSister Someone - Pure Hit ZingersNotes from Eric, former band member: "We did 50-100 of each of these and they completely sold out. On the second album (officially called "Luvsilly" but we thought "Pure Hit Zingers" was more trackworthy (real word?), the lengths of tape I used were so radically different, that some people who bought them received unfinished demos of some songs that I had on hand at the time, just to make the track lengths even out, although the labels were all the same, and didn't indicate as such.

| The Melvins Live at Slim's c. 2000 Inactive 8 Entertainment Dallas, TX This one was sent to me by Matt Parrillo of Life is Abuse records and is an official live 8-track by the world's heaviest band, THE MELVINS. It was recorded live at Slims in San Francisco in 1999, and was released in a limited numbered edition of 100 copies. The band has been selling the first 50 on their current tour "2 x 4" Tour (appearing with Leif Garrett). The tape became an instant collector's item, selling on eBay and the like. The songs are mainly from the late 90's MELVINS releases, with lots of great tunes from The Maggot, Stag, and Bootlicker. There's also a crusty oldie: "Eye Flies" from 1987's Gluey Porch Treatments. The 8-tracks vary in length, and depending how lucky you are, there are "bonus tracks" available on some tapes. read more.... |

| The Volares The Night We Taught Ourselves to Sing c. 1998 Inactive 8 Entertainment Dallas, TX This band is headed by the famed Mr. James "Big Bucks" Burnett. For the uninitiated, Mr. Bucks is one of the original movers and shakers of the pre-internet 8-track scene. His store, 14 Records in Dallas, TX was immortalized in Russ Forster's "So Wrong They're Right" He was also head of the Tiny Tim fan club for many years, and helped produced a tribute album to said vocal demi-god. The album was put out a little over a year ago; 20 custom 8 tracks were printed up, with labels put on various bulk-erased pink cart tapes. If the cover seems a little familiar in a nagging way, it is due to the fact that the artist, Martin Sharp, also did the work on a 60's number entitled Wheels of Fire, by a halfway decent power trio by the name of Cream. It is no gesture of mere empty flattery to my friend Bucks to say that
this is one hell of a solid record. (Jimmy Page thinks so too, and has passed the
compliment personally to Bucks). Sincere affections for the Beatles on the one hand and
Zep on the other are apparent. The album begins & ends with tributes to two of Bucks'
dear departed friends, Ronnie Lane (of the Faces) and Tiny Tim. Thanks to Paul Evans <evanspm41099@hotmail.com> for the notes and the scan. |

| Andy Schneider XX Journey West Records, Austin, TX c. 1998 Andy Schneider is a solo performer from Austin, TX, whose instrument is a baritone guitar, or six-string bass. Andy invented the contraption while living in Boston. Like a guitar on steroids, the baritone shares most of the range of a standard guitar, with the added range of a bass guitar. In the truest DIY spirit, Andy has recorded, mixed and reproduced his own material. He's released an 8-track version of his most recent album XX. Why? "My heroes were on 8-Track and I want to hear my music on 8-Track. Simple as that," says Andy. |
