Christmas wouldn't be Christmas for this tracker without Mirror Image's Yuletide Disco. As the title suggests, it features all of your favorite Christmas carols, injected with insistent beats and wah-wah sound effects.
The songs are mostly instrumental, although some feature a chorus of female voices. And whether you think it a good or bad thing, the music features every disco cliche there was: 'funkified' bass, sweatin' percussion, wah-wah guitar bursts--all mixed with horns that herald the return of the most joyous--and groovy--time of the year. They're all here--"Deck the Halls," "Twelve Days of Christmas" (sadly, no vocals!), "O Tannenbaum," "Good King Wenceslas," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," etc.
I'm not a big disco enthusiast, but from what I can tell, the stuff on this album seems sort of tepid and formulaic--it certainly lacks the spark of, say, Parliament. But then again, it's a season of warmth and gentleness, and if this is going to be a booty-shakin' holiday season, this is what its respectful soundtrack would have to sound like. They do manage to get into a proper yuletide groove, and I can't imagine Christmas without this 8-track!
So after Bing wishes you Merry Christmas in a wise way, Tony remembers his favorite things, and Frank gives joy to the world, put Yuletide Disco in your 8-track player and rock around the Christmas tree!
