James E. Sledge, Smyrna,
GA USAJasesledge@webtv.net Mr. Sledge is our unofficial "Senior Tracker" here on 8-track Heaven. He's 80 years young, and only recently got into 8-tracking, having acquired the player shown here throught the 8-track Heaven classifieds. Mr. Sledge enjoys country and religious tapes, and would probably love to hear from you! He also sent me an interesting news clipping on 74-year old Tom Murphy, who recently retired after 26 years in the Georgia House of Representatives. Rep. Murphy still listens to 8-tracks, although "some of them are getting rotten...I'm having to replace them with CDs." |

yourname@alexlb.freeserve.co.uk "I grew up with the common cassette tapes and most recently CD's, with theodd hint of MiniDisc. I came across this 8-track player with great curiosity in my Grandad's spare room, along with other ageing audio equipment. The player was made in my local city of Coventry by hand by "Coventry Tape Recorder Services." It was bought in the late 60's and put into a bar-lounge at a local Coventry pub. In the very early 70's the lounge was re-furbished, and out went the perfectly working hardly used 8-track. It sat under the bar for roughly 25 years (1970-1995) until the lounge again got re-furbished. This time the 8-track was chucked out, with no-one knowing really what it was, until my Grandad (treasurer of the pub) salvaged it and transferred it, not knowing what it was, to his spare room. In early Nov. '98 I found the player, and after a bit of digging around finding out what it was, I acquired a cartridge and powered it up -- out came the slightly distorted 70's Crosby-Nash music (if you want to call it that)!.. I find 8-track a refreshing, unknown (especially here in England as no-one ever brought them), to an extent mysterious, reliable and a good quality playback alternative. (Stop laughing!)." |

Vinnie
Van Go-Go of RAKE"I almost grew up a little late for 8-tracks; but, for some strange reason, my mom bought a VERY large stereo system with an 8-track in it. This was the late '70s. Inexplicable. It was this massive piece of furniture, with wood sides -- stood nearly 3 feet tall, and had a tuner and turntable. So, we always had carts in the house. The pictured player, however, is the first one I have ever owned. It's a modular Glennburn player. It doesn't play as good as it looks - but it came with 300 carts for $15!! The Kiss Alive II gets the most action. My collection consists of a few black alligator skinned cases chuck full of folk rock and 70s titles. Carole King, Paul Simon, Iron Butterfly and so on. Can't own enough Melanie carts!! Sheesh. OASTEM! VVGG" |

Brad Jackson zlotow@email.msn.comGoole, England "I began collecting in earnest in about 1992
and bought my first recorder in that year. I drove to Harrogate with the lady who is now
my wife [pictured]and paid £25 for a perfect Hitachi D135 recorder with some blank carts
Since then I have had some big successes. In 1994, I bought a "Select" 8T player
and about 30 carts for £12. In truth, I didn't want the player, the carts were all Moody
Blues, Stones, Beatles etc. The carts I own I still have not catalogued but I must have
around 300ish.Luckily, I love cheesy listening so of course 8T suits me down to the
ground.
